You are also able to attend a range of professional development events, with industry networking and making the most of your career post-graduation at their heart
  • This course has an international focus. You will have the opportunity to take a module offered by the International Development Department, allowing you to expand their knowledge across different areas
  • You have the opportunity to take part in the award-winning Future Leaders Certificate. This extra-curricular programme gives you the chance to work on an exciting virtual live project set by a multi-national company. The Future Leaders Certificate enables you to better understand the impact technology is having on the business world and the implications for your own career

Who is this course for?

This course has been especially designed for students with a good first degree in accounting and finance who wish to further specialise in the area and get ready as a professional to meet new challenges in an interconnected global world, with complex but intellectually stimulating business problems to be solved. It is also designed to attract students who wish to combine this MSc degree with Professional ACCA qualification.

Modules

The MSc Accounting and Finance offers you the chance to study in traditional areas such as business taxation and accounting theory, but you can also choose from a variety of new areas, including alternative finance options, social and environmental accounting and data analytics. This course prepares you not only to be a well-qualified and confident finance practitioner, but ensures you have the knowledge you need for a career at the forefront of the emerging trends in accounting and finance.

If you choose to study on this Pathway (2), you will undertake tuition with Kaplan Financial to prepare for two of ACCA Strategic Professional examinations:

The optional modules listed on the website for this programme may unfortunately occasionally be subject to change. As you will appreciate key members of staff may leave the University and this necessitates a review of the modules that are offered. Where the module is no longer available we will let you know as soon as we can and help you make other choices.

Postgraduate Loans for Masters students

Please note that the loan amounts listed below are for 2020 entry. Up to date loan amounts will be published here in due course, as they are made available.

UK students looking to pursue a Masters programme in the UK can apply for a non-means-tested loan from the British government via the Student Loans Company (SLC).  You can get up to:

  • £11,222 if your course starts on or after 1 August 2020
  • £10,906 if your course started between 1 August 2019 and 31 July 2020
  • £10,609 if your course started between 1 August 2018 and 31 July 2019

The amount you’ll get is not based on you or your family’s income. The loan is paid directly to you. You can use it for your course fees and living costs. If your course lasts for more than a year, the loan will be divided equally across each year of your course.

How To Apply

1 July 2021 is the application deadline for international students (Tier 4) who wish to study in the United Kingdom. We are not able to consider applications for 2021 made after this date. The deadline for Home (non-Tier 4) students is 31 August 2021.

Our selected admissions process

A staged admissions process is in place for this programme. This means that when you apply, your application will be considered with all others that have been submitted before the deadline. Therefore you might not hear from us with a decision on your application until a few weeks after the deadline has been reached. This enables us to ensure that all applications are considered fairly and equally. When you apply please ensure that you submit all of your supporting documents including an English language proficiency certificate (if English is not your first language) if you have one.

Our Standard Requirements

A good Honours degree (2:1 or higher) or postgraduate diploma from a UK university or equivalent.

You must have achieved a mark equivalent to a 2:1 (or overseas equivalent) at bachelor’s level in several Accounting and Finance modules including Financial Accounting or Financial Reporting, and Finance or Financial Management.

You must also have successfully completed the nine ACCA Fundamentals assessments, either by exam or exemption from a bachelor’s degree, at the point of application. We can only consider these qualifications if they are submitted as part of the admissions application.

International Requirements



International Students

Standard English language requirements apply (IELTS 7.0 with no less than 6.5 in any band).


IELTS 7.0 with no less than 6.5 in any band is equivalent to:

  • TOEFL: 95 overall with no less than 22 in any band
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE): PTE Academic 67 in all four skills
  • Cambridge English (exams taken from 2015): Advanced or Proficiency – minimum overall score of 185, with no less than 176 in any component

By combining with Kaplan Financial to offer the ACCA this 12 month pathway enables you to leave the University of Birmingham with an MSc and the completion of two ACCA modules; Advanced Performance Management and Advanced Financial Management.  This is a unique programme on offer exclusively to students of the International Accounting and Finance MSc at Birmingham. 

The ACCA elements of this course will be taught by Kaplan Financial who are an award-winning platinum approved provider with 100% pass rates. More information on how they teach the ACCA can be found on the Kaplan website.

The postgraduate Future Leaders Certificate, run by the Business School’s Careers in Business team, is an extra-curricular programme which is designed to prepare our MSc students for the potential impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). This is intended to equip students with the skills they need to stand out and succeed within this increasingly competitive market. As part of this, students will be encouraged to increase their awareness of responsible business and ethical considerations.

The Certificate culminates in our Gold Award, where students will receive expert coaching, mentoring and industry insight, and work on a group project set by multi-national companies which place high importance on their social and corporate responsibility.
