Research summary

John joined the Centre for Doctoral Training in Fuel Cells and Their Fuels in October 1st 2018 as a doctoral researcher. Before joining, John graduated from Loughborough University in July 2018 with an MEng Degree in Aeronautical Engineering.

The aim of John's research is find solutions towards controlling the amount of NOx emissions produced during the combustion process of hydrogen. This research will require computational simulations and experimental validation.

He is funded by the EPSRC CDT in Fuel Cells and Their Fuels: EP/L015749/1.

Qualifications

Master of Engineering (MEng) in Aeronautical Engineering - Loughborough University (2018)

Biography

John studied Aeronautical Engineering at Loughborough University and graduated in 2018. He covered a wide range of topics from both Aircraft and Gas Turbine Design to Applications of Fuel Cells. For his Masters Dissertation, John looked at optimising proton exchange membrane fuels using nickel based metallic foams with different pore sizes. On top of his dissertation, John was also part of a group design project in collaboration with Airbus Space and Defence to design an orbiting X-Ray Observatory to view black holes while orbiting around the L2 Lagrange point.

Research

John's research focuses on understanding the combustion process of hydrogen and controlling the amount of NOx produced from this process. With a full understanding the aim is to find a solution to reduce NOx emissions as much as possible, allowing hydrogen to be fully implemented as a fuel within the heat sector such as boiler systems.

To fully tackle this project, the main areas of interest are:

  • Flame Propagation
  • Flow
  • Chemical Kinetics

Other activities

John is an enthusiastic sportsperson participating in multiple sports from badminton to rowing. His main sport is athletics.
