Networks and the internationalisation performance of EM MNEs: the mediating role of dynamic capabilitiesGuanyi Qi

The concept of networks has been defined as a set of nodes (two or more) connected through a set of ties. Research on international business has long recognised networks as an important means for multinational enterprises (MNEs) to enter and operate in international markets. An increasing number of MNEs, especially MNEs from emerging markets (EM MNEs), have successfully entered and competed in the global markets.

As observed today, the network-based mechanism is believed to be a particularly critical factor for EM MNEs to rapidly and effectively organise in the global market. It should be recognised that, according to social capital theory, networks allow MNEs to embed in a social structure of connections to survive and compete globally, in a form of bridging and bonding.

To shed light on the potential relationship between networks and the internationalisation performance of EM MNEs, the research focuses on the network attributes of EM MNEs and explores their internationalisation process, using a sample of MNEs from China. Additionally, the study tends to identify the importance of dynamic capability in EM MNEs’ network construct. The study aims to make a valuable contribution to the theories of network and internationalization. Specifically, it seeks to deepen the understanding of how networks can enhance the internationalization performance of EM MNEs by improving their dynamic capabilities.
