Dr Alex Lyttle

Senior Research Software Engineer

Alex Lyttle

Alex completed a PhD in astrophysics in 2023, continuing thereafter as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Birmingham. His research background is in stellar astrophysics and asteroseismology -- the study of oscillations in stars. During his research, he developed machine learning models to emulate computationally expensive stellar evolution codes. He built a hierarchical Bayesian framework to take advantage of the speed-up provided by these machine learning models, leading to improved inference of the mass, age, and radius of stars like the Sun.

Alex joined the Research Software Group as an RSE a year after completing his PhD. His software expertise is primarily in Python, with experience in other languages such as MATLAB, HTML/CSS, JavaScript, and C/C++. Alex enjoys contributing to open source software projects and encouraging software best practices in the research community. When he isn't busy coding, he leads training workshops as a certified instructor for The Carpentries and an NVIDIA DLI University Ambassador.
