University of Birmingham Brazil Scholarships

The University of Birmingham is pleased to announce that it will be offering 10 full fee scholarships for Brazilian PhD students to study at Birmingham. The scholarships will be available for students commencing in 2012 and will be available for a maximum of three years. The scheme is offered in partnership with the University of Nottingham. 

Funding available

There will be 10 awards available. Successful applicants will have their tuition and bench fees waived by the University for a maximum of 3 years (36 months)

It has now been confirmed that a living allowance will be provided by the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES), including a return international airfare. Details can be found in the terms and conditions set out by CAPES.

  • Energy, with particular reference to sustainable energy, bioenergy, carbon capture and storage, oil and gas, nuclear energy and energy policy
  • Food security
  • Globalisation (particularly from an economics/business perspective)
  • Imaging, neuroscience and cognition
  • Astronomy
  • Mathematics
  • Materials (from nano to structural material properties)
  • Digital economy
  • Biotechnology, biological chemistry and drug discovery
  • Global infection and healthcare
  • Urban Planning and Regeneration
  • Sustainable heritage and environment

Eligibility criteria

  • Candidates will be citizens and permanent residents of Brazil at the time of application
  • Candidates must not be currently working or studying abroad
  • Candidates must hold an offer from the University of Birmingham; they must therefore fulfil the relevant academic and English language proficiency entry requirements
  • Candidates should have an approved proposed study topic. Preference will be given to the subject areas above.

Application process

Candidates need to make two separate and simultaneous applications:

1. To CAPES (http://www.capes.gov.br/cooperacao-internacional/reino-unido/nottinghambirmingham). The closing date for applications to CAPES is 26th April 2012.
2. To the University of Birmingham - Applicants applying for full time study should visit http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/dr/ to apply. Applicants applying for the sandwich study option, should contact studyabroad@bham.ac.uk for advice on how to apply. All applicants will need an academic offer by June 2012.

Candidates will only be considered for the award where they have been selected by CAPES and are in receipt of an offer from the University of Birmingham.

Selection will take place in June 2012 and successful applicants will be notified shortly thereafter.
