A one-day conference reflecting on cohabitation policy and reform.

Cohabitation reform is a pressing issue in England and Wales. Cohabiting couples are the fastest growing family form but, given the lack of comprehensive legal protections upon breakdown or death, often experience relationship generated disadvantage. While these issues have been acknowledged by practitioners and academics for decades, they were emphasised more recently by the Rights of Cohabiting Partners Report of the Women and Equalities Committee of the UK Parliament.
This one-day conference brought together academics, practitioners, and policymakers to reflect on how cohabitation reform can be secured in England and Wales. It involved a series of presentations by experts in the field and the launch of research findings of a major comparative study on cohabitation undertaken by Professor Jens Scherpe and Dr Andy Hayward. The final plenary of the day was hosted by Family Law Reform Now, which is a group of academics and practitioners campaigning for reform in key areas of family law.
