Immerse yourself in a course exploring the breadth and depth of chemistry, integrating skills and careers development with core theory and hands-on lab classes. Customise your learning experience with options modules and engaging research projects to explore the frontiers of chemistry as well as its intersection with other disciplines.
All students take the same modules in year 1 to develop a comprehensive understanding of the core concepts, in inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry and data analysis, that underpin more advanced study across the breadth of chemistry.
Your classes will help you develop independent problem-solving and critical analysis skills, all while building your communication, presentation and team-working skills. Practical classes are carefully designed to complement the lectures and build up your skills and competencies in the lab.
A Themes in Chemistry module gives you the opportunity to explore frontier areas of chemistry of most interest to you, such as sustainability, medicinal chemistry and coding. You'll also attend workshops and training sessions to start preparing for the year in industry.
You’ll investigate broader aspects of inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry, encountering topics of significance to professional chemists and exploring how these areas overlap and extend into other disciplines.
Research-linked experiments further develop your skills in experimental design and the interpretation of laboratory results. You have the opportunity to personalise your learning by choosing from all of the chemistry options courses ranging from fundamental to multidisciplinary and applied areas.
You'll be matched to one of our School's dedicated academic placements tutors who, along with the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences Careers Team, will help you in identifying suitable placement opportunities and support you through the full application process.
Industrial Year
Whilst you are out on your industrial placement, you will maintain frequent contact with Birmingham Chemistry via your academic supervisor, who has been assigned to support you during your placement and will visit you on site to monitor your progress and check on your welfare.
You will write a report on your work and present your results to your peers and other members of the School in a research symposium.
Returning to Birmingham for your fourth and final year, you’ll be able to shape your own distinctive degree based on your interests and career ambitions through the chemistry options modules and your research project.
The options modules cover advanced topics across the breadth of our research expertise, and include computational, energy, materials, medicinal and sustainable chemistry. You can choose to build on the areas selected in year 2, try new directions, or do a mixture.
You’ll choose research projects from a range of lab-based to theoretical projects and that span core and multidisciplinary aspects of chemistry as well as educational and scientific outreach.
In the Structure, Strategy and Spectroscopy module, you’ll learn about a range of advanced spectroscopic and analytical techniques used by professional chemists, and link these techniques to previously covered topics to promote your holistic view of chemistry and further hone your problem-solving skills.
